Position

What this site is and is not

Not a tour operator. We do not run trips, hold permits, employ guides or take bookings. Enquiries sent through this site are passed to a licensed Sabah tour operator who does all of that.

Not the conservation area. Maliau Basin is managed by Yayasan Sabah through its Conservation and Environmental Management Division. Permits come from them. We have no role in that process beyond explaining it.

Not free of commercial interest. We may earn a commission if you book through an enquiry that started here. That is stated plainly on its own page rather than buried, because a guide that pretends to be disinterested while taking a cut is worth less than one that says so.

What we are is a reference for people planning a first trip into Sabah's interior, written because the existing material is thin, contradictory and in places years out of date.

Method

How this guide is researched

Facts on this site come from published operator itineraries, Yayasan Sabah and Sabah government material, conservation and forestry sources, and peer-reviewed or institutional publications where they exist. Prices come directly from the operator's published rates on the date stated.

Where sources conflict, we say so

This happens more often than you would expect at Maliau, and most sites resolve it by picking one version and stating it as fact. We do not.

• The best season. Operators run March to October. Other guides put the drier window at January to July with April and May driest and August among the wettest. Our page sets out both and explains why they disagree, then recommends the overlap.
• The Studies Centre's founding. Sources give both a 1999 Yayasan Sabah and DANIDA project and a 2011 opening. Possibly phased. We describe the partnership and do not assert a year.
• Hornbill species counts. Sources differ. We say hornbills occur and do not quote a number.

Standards

What we will not publish

This is the part that matters most, and it is why some pages here are shorter than a competitor's.

Permit and conservation fee amounts

Fee schedules are set by Yayasan Sabah and change. Figures circulating on third-party sites range from decade-old blog numbers to package prices mislabelled as entrance fees. Malaysia's own national tourism site declines to publish them and directs visitors to contact Yayasan Sabah. We take the same position: better to send you to the source than to quote a number that turns out to be wrong at the gate.

Unverifiable measurements

Individual tier heights for Maliau Falls circulate widely but we have not found a source worth citing, so we leave them out. We do publish the 38 metre height of Takob Akob Falls, the 945 and 645 metre camp elevations and the 588.4 square kilometre conservation area, because those are documented.

Rainfall figures for the basin

The specific numbers in circulation trace back to sources with no checkable citation. We describe the climate accurately instead. See the weather page.

Wildlife that is no longer there

A number of Maliau pages still list the Sumatran rhinoceros. The species was declared extinct in Malaysia after the last known individual died in 2019. Our wildlife page says so.

Editorial stance

We will tell you not to come

We earn a commission when people book, and we still publish the following, because a recommendation that is never withheld is not a recommendation.

• Danum Valley is the better destination if wildlife sightings are the goal, if it is your first Borneo rainforest trip, or if you are travelling with young children.
• Do not plan a trip around rafflesia. Blooms are unpredictable and Sabah has sites managed specifically for viewing them.
• Maliau is not a corporate retreat venue and most corporate briefs are better served elsewhere.
• The four-day trek is harder than the five-day, despite what the labels suggest.
• For a lot of people asking whether it is worth it, the answer is no.
