Total days includes two travel days, which is the single most common planning error. A five-day trek is a seven-day commitment from the moment you land in Sabah. Prices and inclusions are here.
Before you choose by day count
The four-day trek is harder than the five-day
Both cover the same interior. The four-day compresses it, with a 10 kilometre roughly seven-hour push from Nepenthes over Maliau Falls to Ginseng, plus a Giluk Falls side trek on day two. The five-day splits that ground and treats Maliau Falls as an unhurried out-and-back. Book the four-day only if you are a strong walker short on time. Difficulty in detail.
The trekking packages skip the canopy structures
The Sky Bridge and Observation Tower appear on Studies Centre itineraries only. Trekkers spend one night at the centre and head straight for Agathis. If you want both the canopy and the interior, that is a custom itinerary, not an add-on. More here.

Maliau + Danum Valley
The strongest pairing, because they complement rather than repeat. Danum is a wildlife destination with comfortable lodging; Maliau is an expedition. Do Danum first — Maliau after Danum reads as an escalation, the reverse can feel tame. Enter Maliau via Tawau to keep both on the east side of the state. Allow 10 to 12 days.
Maliau + Semporna or Sipadan
Also an east-coast run, and efficient from Tawau. Dive first, trek second. Coming out of four days of trekking to then dive is harder than the reverse, and the long road transfer conveniently handles the no-flying-after-diving interval. Allow 9 to 11 days.
Maliau + Mount Kinabalu
Both from Kota Kinabalu, but back-to-back is a lot of consecutive physical days. If you do both, put at least two rest days between them, and do Kinabalu first — it is a fixed two-day objective and easier to schedule around. Allow 10 to 12 days.
Maliau alone
Entirely reasonable, and the simplest to plan. Fly into Kota Kinabalu, buffer night, package, buffer night, fly out. Five to seven days depending on the itinerary.
Say what else is on your list at the enquiry stage. It changes which entry point makes sense and therefore which package structure to quote. Working it out after booking usually means backtracking across Sabah.
Rules for building the schedule
- Buffer night on arrival, always. Departures leave around 7am and there is no later option if your flight slips.
- Never fly out the evening you come out of the basin. Five to six hours on rough road after a full day of walking, and delays are normal.
- Check availability before fixing dates. Camp space at Nepenthes and Ginseng, not the permit, is usually what decides your window. Ask what is open, then book flights.
- Aim at April to July if you can flex. That window sits inside every version of the seasonal advice, which genuinely conflicts.
- Avoid November and December. The one period the different accounts agree is least favourable.
- Allow months of lead time. Permits and camp space are capped by design. How permits work.

Add two travel days to the package length. A three-day Studies Centre stay is five days total, a five-day trek is seven. The road transfer is five to six hours each way from Kota Kinabalu.
