Maliau Basin from Tawau and Semporna

The route from Tawau to Maliau Basin

Tawau sits on Sabah's south-east coast, roughly 190 kilometres from the basin. The route runs inland via the Kalabakan road, through plantation country and then logging tracks as you approach the conservation area boundary.

Driving time is commonly quoted at four to five hours, though reports vary with road conditions and this is not a surfaced highway for most of its length. As with every approach, a four-wheel drive is required and transfers are arranged by the operator rather than self-driven.

You arrive at the same Maliau Basin gate as everyone else, register there, and continue roughly 27 kilometres to the Studies Centre.

Combining Maliau Basin with Semporna or Sipadan

This is the strongest argument for the Tawau route, and it is a genuinely good itinerary.

Semporna is the jumping-off point for Sipadan, Mabul and Kapalai, and it sits on the same side of Sabah as the Tawau approach to Maliau. Doing both from a Kota Kinabalu base means crossing the state twice. Doing both from Tawau means one long overland leg instead of three.

Sequencing matters. Put the diving first and Maliau second if you can. Coming out of four days of trekking to then dive is harder than the reverse, and dive operators generally advise against flying too soon after diving, which the road transfer neatly sidesteps.

Drop-offs at Semporna or Tawau at the end of a trek can be arranged on request, so you do not need to return the way you came.

Combining Maliau Basin with Danum Valley

Danum runs from Lahad Datu, roughly two and a half hours by 4WD, and Lahad Datu is on the east coast north of Tawau. So an east-coast entry to Maliau puts both reserves on the same side of the state.

They complement each other rather than repeat. Danum is a wildlife destination with comfortable lodging and short transfers. Maliau is an expedition where the landscape and isolation are the draw. The full comparison is here.

Do Danum first. Maliau after Danum reads as an escalation. Danum after Maliau can feel tame.

Flying into Tawau

Tawau has a domestic airport with connections through Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu. Fewer options than Kota Kinabalu International, and generally a connection rather than a direct international arrival.

That is the trade. Tawau saves you an hour or two on the road and costs you flight flexibility. If Maliau is a standalone trip, Kota Kinabalu is usually simpler. If it is part of an east-coast run, Tawau wins comfortably.

Buffer nights still apply

Departures leave early and there is no second option later in the day. Arrive in Tawau at least the night before your transfer, and do not book an onward flight the evening you come out of the basin. The return leg is several hours on rough road after a full day of walking, and delays are normal.
