The Maliau Basin Sky Bridge
The canopy walkway at the Studies Centre, and the source of the single most common booking mistake at Maliau: it appears on the Studies Centre itineraries only. If you book a trek, you will not see it.
What the Sky Bridge is
The Sky Bridge is Maliau Basin's canopy walkway, reached from the Maliau Basin Studies Centre. Getting to it involves first crossing a hanging bridge over the Maliau River, which is a small event in itself, before climbing to the walkway proper.
From the walkway you get panoramic views across the surrounding forest at canopy level — a completely different perspective from the forest floor, and the reason canopy structures exist at rainforest reserves worldwide. Birds, insects and epiphytes that are invisible from below become the whole picture from up there.
It pairs naturally with the Observation Tower, the centre's other elevated structure and the standard sunset spot, which appears on the same itineraries.

This is worth stating as plainly as possible, because the assumption runs the other way.
People reason that the trekking itineraries are the more thorough experience, so they must include everything the shorter Studies Centre packages include, plus the interior. That is not how the itineraries are built.

The trekking packages spend one night at the Studies Centre and head straight out to Agathis Camp the following morning. There is no spare half-day for the canopy structures, and none is scheduled.
If you want both the canopy structures and the interior camps, you are looking at a longer custom itinerary rather than any of the four standard packages. Raise it at the enquiry stage, because it needs building rather than adding on.
Is the Sky Bridge reason enough to choose a Studies Centre package?
For some people, yes. Canopy access is genuinely the best way to see rainforest birds and the upper-storey ecosystem, and it requires no fitness at all beyond walking to it.
Where it is the deciding factor: birders, photographers working with long lenses, families, mixed-fitness groups, and anyone whose interest is the forest itself rather than the expedition.
Where it is not: if you came for Maliau's reputation — the isolation, the camps, the seven-tiered falls — a canopy walkway is not what you are missing. Plenty of Sabah reserves have one. Only Maliau has the interior.
Both Studies Centre itineraries include the Sky Bridge. The four-day version adds the Manggaris and Avian trails and a second night drive for roughly RM550 more on the Malaysian rate, which is the better value of the two if wildlife is the point. Full pricing here.

- Guided only. As with every trail and structure in the conservation area, a registered guide accompanies you. There is no self-guided access anywhere at Maliau.
- Weather. Elevated structures close in high wind or storms. This is a safety call and it is not negotiable.
- Timing. Both itineraries schedule it on a full day at the centre, typically after a morning trail walk.
- Cameras. Packages include a non-DSLR camera fee. A DSLR attracts a separate charge, so confirm the current amount when booking.
- Footwear. Boards can be slick after rain. The same shoes you would wear on the trails.
Status
The Sky Bridge appears on current operator itineraries for both Studies Centre packages, so it is in normal use. As with any structure of this kind, closures for maintenance or weather happen without notice — confirm at the time of booking if it is the reason you are choosing that package.
