Maliau Basin from Kota Kinabalu

Leg one: Kota Kinabalu to Keningau
South out of the city and up into the Crocker Range, which is the genuinely scenic part of the journey. A winding mountain road through one of Sabah's more dramatic landscapes, and worth staying awake for even at that hour.
Leg two: Keningau into the interior
From Keningau the route turns east along the Keningau to Sapulut road and into the interior. The terrain flattens and the road deteriorates progressively. The final approach runs through logging roads and oil palm estate tracks, which is where the four-wheel drive earns its keep and why self-driving is not a realistic option.
Leg three: the gate to the Studies Centre
Registration at the Maliau Basin gate, usually with a welcome drink at the Shell building where there is an information gallery and a cafe. Then roughly 27 kilometres, about 30 to 40 minutes, to the Studies Centre.

Keningau is the last town of any size before the interior, and most itineraries build in a short stop. Treat it as your final chance rather than a comfort break.
- Adidas Kampung. The rubber-studded local trekking shoe, which grips wet roots better than most imported boots and costs a fraction as much. If you arrived underequipped, buy here.
- Socks. Cheap, and you want more pairs than you brought. Nothing dries at the camps.
- Snacks. There are no shops inside the conservation area. Anything beyond what the package provides has to come with you.
- Batteries. For the head torch, since there is no power in the interior.
- Cash. Last reliable ATM.

Building Maliau into a Kota Kinabalu trip
How many days to allow
Add two travel days to whatever the package says. A five-day trek is realistically a seven-day commitment from the moment you land. Expect to be back in Kota Kinabalu around 7pm on the final day.
Arrive the night before, at minimum
Departures leave around 7am and there is no later option if your flight slips. Flying into Kota Kinabalu the same morning your transfer departs is how people lose the trip entirely. A buffer night in the city is cheap insurance.
Do not book an onward flight the evening you come out
The return leg is five to six hours on rough road after a full day of walking. Delays are normal. Give yourself a night in Kota Kinabalu before flying anywhere.
Combining with the rest of Sabah
Maliau sits inland and south. Mount Kinabalu and the islands are north and coastal, so a Kota Kinabalu base works well for combining those. If Danum Valley, Semporna or Sipadan are also on your list, consider entering Maliau from Tawau instead and avoiding a great deal of backtracking.
Studies Centre stays from RM3,500, treks from RM4,990 — every package compared on one page.
