The forest types of Maliau Basin
Most rainforest destinations show you one habitat. Maliau stacks several on top of each other, because the ground rises from lowland floor to montane rim inside a single enclosed bowl. You walk between them in hours rather than days.
Why Maliau Basin has so many forest types
The basin is a bowl roughly 25 kilometres across, walled by sandstone escarpment rising above 1,675 metres on the northern rim, with the floor far below. That vertical range sits inside one closed catchment, which is unusual.
Elsewhere in Borneo you would drive for hours between lowland dipterocarp forest and montane cloud forest. At Maliau the transition happens along a single trekking day, which is why the trek is more interesting botanically than the distances suggest, and why the birding is stronger than at Danum.
An estimated 1,800 tree species grow across the conservation area, several dozen of which are formally listed as endangered or close to extinction.
Lowland and hill dipterocarp forest
The classic tall Bornean rainforest — buttressed giants, a closed canopy, and the low light of a forest floor under 50 metres of leaves. This covers the basin's outer slopes and lower ground.
Dipterocarps are the family that made Borneo's timber industry, which is exactly why intact stands matter. Maliau's have never been logged. The first trekking day, climbing from Agathis, starts in this forest before leaving it behind.

Above the dipterocarps the forest changes character. Huge Agathis conifers dominate, mixed with oaks, laurels and Dacrydium. The canopy is lower and more broken, the trees are shorter, and more light reaches the ground.
Agathis Camp, the trailhead for the loop, takes its name from these conifers. Riverbanks through this zone are lined with distinctive Dipteris ferns, a plant lineage far older than the flowering trees around it.
Mossy cloud forest
Higher again, on the northern rim, the lower montane forest grades into mossy cloud forest — everything draped in epiphytes and moss, with cloud sitting in the canopy for much of the day. It tells you how much moisture hangs in the air up there even when it is not raining. More on conditions here.
Montane heath forest
This is the habitat people photograph most, and the one that looks least like anyone's mental image of Borneo.
Heath forest occupies flatter ground on nutrient-poor, highly acidic soil. The trees are stunted, the canopy is open, and the plant community is entirely shaped by scarcity: ant plants, rhododendrons, and pitcher plants in abundance, with nine Nepenthes species recorded in the conservation area and at least six along the Agathis to Nepenthes trail alone. More than 80 orchid species have also been recorded.
The same acidity produces the tea-coloured water in the basin's rivers, stained by tannins and humic compounds leaching from the peaty ground. That water is low in nutrients and supports very few fish, which is part of why amphibian diversity is high.
Nepenthes Camp sits at 945 metres in this forest. The second trekking day, dropping from Nepenthes to Ginseng, runs through the densest heath and is the best day of the loop for plants.

Studies Centre trails run through lowland forest near the centre. The montane and heath forest require a trek, which is the botanical argument for the harder itinerary. The mossy cloud forest on the northern rim sits outside the standard visitor circuit entirely — roughly a third of the basin is open to visitors, and less than half has been properly explored even by researchers.
