Nine species recorded, growing thickest in the montane heath forest that gives Maliau its strangest landscape. There is a camp named after them, and a frog that breeds inside them.
Why pitcher plants thrive at Maliau Basin
Carnivorous plants are a response to bad soil, not a curiosity. Nepenthes trap and digest insects because the ground cannot supply the nitrogen they need.
Maliau's montane heath forest sits on flat, nutrient-poor, highly acidic ground. Everything growing there is adapted to scarcity: stunted trees, ant plants, rhododendrons, and pitcher plants in abundance. It is the visually strangest habitat in the basin and the one most photographed, precisely because nothing about it looks like the tall closed-canopy rainforest people expect from Borneo.
The same acidity produces the tea-coloured, tannin-stained water in the basin's rivers, which supports very few fish. More on the forest types here.

The Agathis to Nepenthes trail
At least six species have been recorded along this single stretch, alongside rhododendrons and wild orchids. It is the first trekking day on both itineraries, a 7.5 kilometre climb that transitions from mixed dipterocarp into lower montane forest. The pitchers appear as you gain height.
Nepenthes Camp
The camp is named for them and sits at 945 metres in the heath forest where they grow thickest. It was formerly called Camel Trophy Camp, a name still found in older trip reports — the current name is considerably more descriptive. More on the camps here.
The Nepenthes to Ginseng leg
The second trekking day drops through lower montane into heath forest proper, and this is where the density is highest. It is also the most varied and least punishing day of the loop, which helps if you want to stop and photograph.
You need to be trekking. The heath forest sits in the interior. Studies Centre packages do not reach it, so if pitcher plants are the reason you are coming, book a trekking itinerary.

Maliau has over 30 recorded amphibian species, and among them is a frog that breeds inside the pitchers themselves, using the fluid-filled traps as nursery pools for its tadpoles.
The logic is elegant. The basin's water is highly acidic and low in nutrients, so it supports very few fish — and fish are the main predator of tadpoles. A pitcher is a small, contained, fish-free pool of water suspended above the forest floor. For a frog willing to risk a digestive trap, it is close to ideal.
It is a good illustration of what Maliau actually offers. Not the big mammals, which Danum Valley does better, but a closed catchment where scarcity has driven a set of relationships you do not find assembled this way elsewhere.
Looking, not touching
The briefing at the Studies Centre covers this and it is not decorative. Do not pick plants or disturb them. Several species inside the basin exist nowhere else, Nepenthes are slow-growing, and the basin is a Class I Protection Forest Reserve where collection is prohibited outright.
Practically: photograph from the trail, do not tip pitchers to look inside — you may be pouring out a tadpole — and do not step off the path to reach a better angle. Heath forest ground cover is fragile and slow to recover.
