Maliau Gorge
The basin is walled on almost every side by cliffs and near-vertical slopes. Almost. In the south-east corner there is a single breach, and every drop of water inside the rim leaves through it.
What the Maliau Gorge is
Maliau Basin is a single, closed water catchment. Every stream inside the escarpment rim feeds the Maliau River, and the Maliau River escapes through a gorge in the south-east corner of the basin.
From there it flows into the Kuamut, and the Kuamut into the Kinabatangan — Sabah's longest river, which eventually reaches the Sulu Sea on the east coast. Water that falls on the heath forest at 900 metres inside the basin ends up in the Kinabatangan floodplain, hundreds of kilometres away.

The gorge is not a scenic attraction so much as the key to why Maliau is what it is.
It is why nobody settled here
A bowl walled by cliffs with one narrow breach is extremely difficult to enter or farm. No permanent settlement was ever established inside the basin, no logging concession ever worked it, and it stayed off the map long after the rest of Sabah was surveyed. The first proper scientific expedition into the interior took place only in 1988.
It is why the water is what it is
A closed catchment draining through peaty leaf litter and heath forest produces water that is oligotrophic — low in nutrients, highly acidic, stained tea-brown by tannins and humic compounds. That chemistry is why the basin's rivers support very few fish, and part of why amphibian diversity is high, with over 30 species recorded including a frog that breeds inside pitcher plants.
It is why the basin matters downstream
An intact forested catchment regulates flow into the lowlands, buffers flood peaks through infiltration, and delivers clean water to the Kinabatangan system. This is a substantial part of the argument for the basin's protection as a Class I Protection Forest Reserve, gazetted in 1997 — the highest level of protection available in Sabah's forest classification.
Can you visit the Maliau Gorge?
Not on any standard package. The gorge sits in the south-east of the basin, well away from both the Studies Centre and the trekking loop, in terrain that is not part of the visitor circuit.
Roughly a third of the conservation area is open to visitors at all, and less than half has been properly explored even by researchers. The gorge falls outside what is bookable.
What you can see is the same water. The rivers you cross on the trek, and the falls at Maliau, Ginseng, Giluk and Takob Akob, are all part of the system that funnels out through it. The waterfalls page covers what is reachable.
